Some of my readers my be familiar with the work of Frederic Wierum, also known as “Fred the Dinosaurman”. A talented paleoartist, he has a varied portfolio, from realistic paleoart to adorable claymation shorts on YouTube. To my pleasant surprise, we can include coloring book author to that list, as well! Fellow dinosaur book reviewer Herman Diaz kindly sent me a copy for me to check out, so without any further ado, here’s My Dinosaur Alphabet Coloring Book!

As the title suggests, this coloring book is organized alphabetically, with two dinosaurs for each letter of the alphabet, for a total of 52 coloring pages (53 if you count the title page).

Fred’s drawings have a lot of character to them, while still remaining largely accurate to the species depicted, even when they are depicted doing silly things. This sort of stylization that remains true to the form of the dinosaurs in question is something I always appreciate seeing.

The dinosaurs are depicted by themselves on a plain background, as opposed to the simple landscapes presented in The Coloring Book of (Scientifically Accurate) Paleofauna. I don’t have a preference for one over the other, as sometimes one wants a fuller picture, while other times it can be nice to color a more simple image.

I suppose one could critique it for being too basic; it feels like there could have been a bit more added to the book, like perhaps a brief factual blurb about each dinosaur or something like that, but I personally don’t think the overall experience is hurt for being so simple.
All in all, My Dinosaur Alphabet Coloring Book makes for a charming addition to my collection. I particularly recommend it for younger dino nerds, but rather enjoyed the experience of coloring in it myself. I happily give it my Dino Dad Stomp of Approval!
